Donald Trump is Running One of the Most Bigoted, Self-Destructive Campaigns in American History
Ten weeks ago, Donald Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee. Since then, his campaign has devolved into an all-out assault on common decency. In the past ten weeks, Trump has promoted anti-Semitic imagery, attacked a federal judge’s Mexican heritage and suggested that President Obama was a terrorist sympathizer. Trump’s hateful rhetoric—which House Speaker Paul Ryan called “racist”—has been coupled with a bizarre addiction to self-congratulation. Trump congratulated himself for predicting both the Orlando attacks that left 49 dead and the Brexit vote in the UK (which he cheered because he claimed it helped his Scottish golf course).
Trump’s erratic behavior and bigotry is unprecedented for a major party’s nominee, and each attempt to “pivot” to a kinder, gentler Trump has utterly failed. Instead, the campaign has lurched from one self-inflicted disaster to the next. In the process, Trump has revealed himself to be both utterly unfit for the White House and a specialist in self-destruction.
