Washington, DC – Correct The Record released the following statement in response to news that Trey Gowdy is using his position as Chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi to fundraise for multiple Republican candidates, including Marco Rubio in Texas this week. Gowdy has repeatedly claimed he would not fundraise for Republicans using the Benghazi tragedy and said he “never sought to raise a single penny” off of the Benghazi investigation.
“Trey Gowdy has made the Benghazi Committee to be nothing more than a taxpayer-funded political hit job against Hillary Clinton and now he is plainly raising money for the Republican party off the tragic death of four Americans. Gowdy should apologize and withdraw immediately from these fundraisers or he should terminate his investigation, which has been revealed repeatedly to be thinly-veiled Republican campaign activity. The Benghazi Committee is nothing more than a vehicle used to benefit Republicans financially, unite extreme conservatives and hurt Hillary Clinton.”
