On January 24, 2016, Donald Trump promised that he would release his tax returns.
234 days later, the American people still haven’t seen them.
In the meantime, Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine and even Trump’s running mate Mike Pence have released at least ten years of their tax returns. Yet Donald Trump—who tonight is in Canton, Ohio—still hasn’t even disclosed a year of his taxes. Trump’s refusal to release his returns flouts decades of precedent and raises troubling questions: What is Donald Trump hiding? Is Donald Trump less rich than he claims? Does he not give to charity? And most troublingly, could the next president of the United States be hiding ties to a foreign government ?
These concerns about Trump’s conflicts of interest are serious. Just this morning, Newsweek published a devastating expose into the Trump’ Organization’s suspect ties to businesses and political interests in countries as diverse as Libya, Turkey, Ukraine, South Korea, India, United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan. As Newsweek noted, “Never before has an American candidate for president had so many financial ties with American allies and enemies, and never before has a business posed such a threat to the United States.”
