In Atkinson, New Hampshire, Donald Trump this afternoon railed against corruption and claimed that he alone could fix America’s rigged political system. That’s ironic. Today, two new devastating developments exposed the depth of corruption among members of his campaign. This morning, two former senior aides to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (who leads the Trump transition effort) were found guilty on all counts for their role in the Bridgegate scandal. There is now little doubt that Christie was intimately involved in the scandal: both the prosecution and defense presented evidence that Christie himself was involved in the lane closures.
The situation with Trump campaign surrogate Rudy Giuliani is even more disturbing. For months, Giuliani has cited FBI sources to spread rumors and innuendo about Hillary Clinton. This morning, Giuliani went even further by shockingly confirming that FBI staff had told him about Director James Comey’s letter to Congress before its release. Giuliani’s admission now raises the spectre that the FBI could be illegally working with the Trump campaign to influence the outcome of the presidential election. This chilling development recalls the darkest episodes in the history of the FBI. As The New York Times’ Jim Dwyer noted today, Giuliani’s shady relationship with the FBI—and his brutal attacks on Clinton—are “giving Joseph McCarthy a run for his money.”
