Donald Trump thrives on populist rage, and he’s leading the primary race. Trump’s rallies draw an ugly kind of passion—hate, aggression, bigotry. Those supporters of his might look like extremists, but for today’s Republican Party, extreme is the new normal. How else could Trump lead the field with 38% of the primary vote?
The other candidates look to Trump and follow his lead. They’ve seen that fear equals votes, and every last one wants a part of that spotlight. If imitation is the best compliment, then the Republican field is falling over with praise. They’ve adopted similar language and have all agreed to support his candidacy. This is the GOP 2015.
