Washington, DC – Correct The Record released the following statement on Jeb Bush’s speech today before the National Urban League.
“Jeb Bush’s appearance at the Urban League today was the theatre of the absurd,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct the Record. “You just can’t trust him. This is the same Jeb Bush who said when he first ran for Governor that he would ‘probably [do] nothing’ to support the black community—and when he finally became Governor he made sure that statement was proved true. This is the same Jeb Bush who presided over the purging of tens of thousands of African American voters off the rolls. This is the same Jeb Bush who, for no good reason, targeted the very organization he spoke before today, vetoing $50,000 in state funding for the Urban League Headquarters and Skills Training Center.
“In his speech, Jeb talked an awful lot about education, economic opportunity and ‘restorative justice.’ But his entire record as Florida governor reflects a completely opposite set of priorities:
- Governor Bush’s ‘One Florida’ effort to gut affirmative action in the state led to a huge drop in African American enrollment at state universities.
- Not only did Jeb’s trickle-down economic agenda in Florida redistribute wealth to the richest in the state, but he specifically vetoed grants to benefit African-American-owned businesses.
- Finally, from ‘Stand Your Ground’ to gun-sentencing proposals that disproportionately targeted African-Americans, Jeb pushed discriminatory policing and sentencing laws at every turn.
“Jeb may be trying to sing a new tune today, but his record on racial issues is one of the most backward and regressive in national politics. After decades spent implementing shameful policies disproportionately targeting the black community, Jeb just can’t be trusted.”
