“Hopefully the American people didn’t tune into that train wreck of a Republican presidential debate tonight, because if they did they’ll need to be treated for depression and anxiety disorder,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “According to these folks, America is in decline, women should be denied control of their own bodies, an economy that has added 13 million jobs since the great recession is off the rails, we should torture our enemies, ban all Muslims, carpet bomb civilians, deny gays the right to marry, and either force undocumented immigrants into the shadows or round them up and deport them.
“It’s hard to imagine how these candidates could be more out of step with the American people – but this is what Republicans have become in the era of Trump. Donald Trump’s dominance in the polls, his extreme positions and bellicose rhetoric continue to set the pace for a field that has been playing catch up to this celebrity show carnival barker since day one.
“But more telling about the sorry electoral position Republicans find themselves in is the continued piling on of Hillary Clinton. Other than President Obama (Rubio, Obama, Rinse, Repeat), no Democrat was mentioned more than Hillary Clinton – certainly not Bernie Sanders – for the very simple reason that Republicans both expect Secretary Clinton to be the nominee of the Democratic Party and she is the candidate they fear. It may be cliché to say so – but Hillary Clinton was the hands down winner of tonight’s debate – and Republicans’ prospects for 2016 was the clear loser.”
