THE FICTION:
Rep. Darrell Issa accused Hillary Clinton of issuing a stand down order to U.S. military personnel in Tripoli on the night of the Benghazi attacks.
THE CORRECTION:
Rep. Elijah Cummings demanded a public apology, Friday, from Rep. Darrell Issa for his absurd accusations against Hillary Clinton. In the letter, Cummings demanded Issa retract the false accusations launched against Hillary Clinton, calling them “reckless, baseless, and utterly offensive accusations.”
But, Issa’s statement completely ignores the recent Congressional investigations report that explicitly denied the existence of the stand down order.
In his letter, Rep. Cummings reminds Issa that “just seven days before you made your accusations in New Hampshire, eight of your own Republicans colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee issued a report concluding that, ‘There was no stand down order issued to U.S. military personnel in Tripoli who sought to join the fight in Benghazi.’”
Issa did more than just contradict his own Republican colleagues; he contradicted himself.
In a rare moment of candor in 2012, Rep. Issa admitted reality and praised Hillary Clinton profusely. Only now under partisan political pressure, Issa has contradicted himself.In December 2012, Rep. Issa defended Hillary Clinton’s handling of Benghazi, stating that “when the call came in at three o’clock in the morning, the failure wasn’t viewed….as Secretary Clinton’s” and that “her legacy is mostly intact for 2016, if she chooses.”
In that moment of candor, Rep. Issa revealed his admiration for Hillary Clinton’s character, describing her as “honest.” According to Rep. Issa, “I think her personal standing— her legacy of tough but honest, diplomatic but not disingenuous— I think it’s important to her.”
