An image of Hillary Clinton that was widely criticized as anti-Semitic after it was tweeted by Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee for president, appears to have originated two weeks ago on a Twitter account devoted to bigoted memes. Trump tweeted the graphic on Saturday attacking Clinton in an image that included what appears to be a Jewish Star of David layered over $100 bills. The tweet calls Clinton ‘the most corrupt candidate ever.’ Painting Jews as corrupt money-grubbers out to secretly control the government has been a well-worn anti-Semitic trope since long before World War II.

Critics erupted with complaints that the graphic evoked anti-Semitic imagery and the Trump campaign refused to answer questions about the tweet even as reports emerged that the image had been posted to an anti-Semitic, white supremacist message board 10 days earlier. Trump downplayed the controversy in a tweet Monday morning by slamming the ‘dishonest media.’

Trump has repeatedly attacked Curiel and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, claiming the former is ‘Spanish’ and the latter is out to get him for electoral gain. At Friday night’s rally, he got more specific, telling the crowd he believes Curiel — who was born in the United States — is Mexican. ‘The judge, who happens to be, we believe, Mexican, which is great, I think that’s fine,’ Trump said, according to the LA Times. ‘You know what? I think the Mexicans are going to end up loving Donald Trump when I give all these jobs, OK?’
Donald Trump said it “would be possible, absolutely” that a Muslim judge would treat him unfairly because of his policies.
Later, when asked if he believed a Muslim judge would treat him unfairly because of another controversial proposal to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the U.S., Trump replied: ‘It’s possible, yes. Yeah. That would be possible, absolutely.’

The man he had pointed to, Gregory Cheadle, a local real estate broker running for a Republican nomination for a congressional seat, said in an interview Friday night that it was ‘surreal’ to be called out by Mr. Trump.
