Fact Check: Donald Trump claims Clinton’s economic plan would weaken America

During his economic speech today in Detroit, Donald Trump said that “if you are a foreign power looking to weaken America, you could not do better than Hillary Clinton’s economic agenda.” In fact, it is Donald Trump’s economic policies that would send the national debt soaring and weaken the American economy.

TRUMP’S LIE: “If you are a foreign power looking to weaken America, you could not do better than Hillary Clinton’s economic agenda.”

THE TRUTH:

Washington Post Fact Checker:

Hillary Clinton’s new spending would be mostly offset by new revenues and would have a negligible effect on the national debt, while Donald Trump’s would send it “soaring.” “Clinton proposes $1.45 trillion in new spending, but it would be mostly offset by new revenues. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which pushes for reducing the national debt, concluded that Donald Trump’s tax and budget proposals would send the national debt soaring over the next 10 years — by another $11.5 trillion — while Clinton’s proposals would have a negligible effect. The group said neither candidate had offered a plan to reduce the national debt, but Trump’s plans would add significantly more debt than Clinton. The group says that under Clinton’s plans, the national debt — now 75 percent of the gross domestic product — would reach 87 percent of the gross domestic product by 2026. By contrast, the national debt would reach 127 percent of GDP under Trump’s proposals.”
