Thanks to Donald Trump, the 2016 presidential election harkens back to a dark age in our nation’s history. The Republican nominee has an astounding history of discrimination from race to gender, religion and everything in between.
Trump’s record began decades ago, when he was sued by the Department of Justice for refusing to rent apartments to people of color. Trump has continued this pattern into his presidential run, as he has made divisive and derogatory comments about immigrants, Muslims, communities of color and women.
Just this week, Trump received the endorsement of one of the most prominent newspapers of the Ku Klux Klan.
Racial discrimination is the antithesis of the America we know and love. We cannot afford to have white supremacy have a platform in the White House.

Trump said that black youths are at ‘a point where they’ve just about never done more poorly. There’s no spirit, there’s killings on an hourly basis, virtually, in places like Baltimore and Chicago and many other places,’ according to The Independent. In the 1970s, Sheila Hoyt-Morse was a tester for the New York City Commission on Human Rights. In one investigation into housing discrimination at a New York apartment building, a black man tried to view an apartment for rent but was told it was no longer available. Sheila went the next day and was enthusiastically shown around the apartment. Sheila later found out that the apartment building was owned and managed by Donald Trump and his father, and that the company dictated this type of discrimination.

Donald and Fred Trump faced a federal lawsuit accusing them of violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968 in the operation of 39 buildings. “Some Americans are just getting to know Donald Trump. Readers of The Times have known him for 42 years. They first met him, on the front page no less, on Oct. 16, 1973. Then 27 years old, Mr. Trump was the president of the Trump Management Corporation, at 600 Avenue Z in Brooklyn, which owned more than 14,000 apartments in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. ‘Major Landlord Accused of Antiblack Bias in City,’ the headline stated. The Department of Justice had brought suit in federal court in Brooklyn against Mr. Trump and his father, Fred C. Trump Management was charged with misrepresenting to black applicants that apartments were not available. “‘The government contended that Trump Management had refused to rent or negotiate rentals “because of race and color,”’ The Times reported. ‘It also charged that the company had required different rental terms and conditions because of race and that it had misrepresented to blacks that apartments were not available.’ Donald Trump’s first quoted words in The New York Times expressed his view of the charges: ‘They are absolutely ridiculous.’” [New York Times, 7/30/15]
Donald and Fred Trump’s firm was accused of discriminating against black and Puerto Ricans in renting. “Federal investigators also gathered evidence. Trump employees had secretly marked the applications of minorities with codes, such as ‘No. 9’ and ‘C’ for ‘colored,’ according to government interview accounts filed in federal court. The employees allegedly directed blacks and Puerto Ricans away from buildings with mostly white tenants, and steered them toward properties that had many minorities, the government filings alleged. Two former Trump employees testified that they were “discouraged rental to blacks.” “Two former Trump employees, a husband and wife who rented properties, were quoted in court documents as saying they were told that the company wanted to rent only to ‘Jews and Executives’ and ‘discouraged rental to blacks.’ The couple told the government’s lawyers that they were advised that “a racial code was in effect, blacks being referred to as ‘No. 9.’” [Washington Post, 1/23/16]
Employees told the Justice Department that they stamped rental applications with codes to indicate an applicant’s skin color. “It was not his first encounter with accusations of racism. In 1973, the department of justice sued Trump management, accusing them of refusing to rent properties to black tenants. The court documents, unearthed by the US website Daily Beast, carry the testimony of employees who describe a crude code implemented when renting properties in Brooklyn and Queens in New York, and Norfolk, Virginia. When black people applied to rent an apartment, employees would attach a sheet bearing a stamp of the letter ‘C’, to indicate the person’s skin colour, the department of justice was told. They would also be quoted higher rents. Employees claimed that Fred Trump, Mr Trump’s father had openly promoted the practice. A Trump Management super said that he was told to accept white applications on site but redirect black applicants to a central office. “A super said he was instructed to send black applicants to the central office but to accept white applications on site. Another rental agent said that Fred Trump had instructed him not to rent to blacks.
