Washington, D.C.—Tonight, Correct The Record Communications Director Elizabeth Shappell released the following statement on Donald Trump’s immigration speech in Arizona:
Tonight confirmed what we knew all along–there is no ‘softening. Donald Trump reiterated his hateful stance on immigration tonight, despite his new campaign team’s best efforts at simmering his rhetoric when referring to those who risk everything to make a better life in our country.
Trump screwed up his big chance to talk about wall payments in Mexico today–choking and then lying about it. That meeting–his one foreign policy credential–meant nothing, apparently. Even though President Enrique Peña Nieto said Mexico isn’t paying for it, Trump tonight shouted that Mexico is going to pay for his wall, but ‘they don’t know it yet.’ Trump keeps on lying and holds the same extreme ideas since he announced his candidacy for president, when he called Mexican immigrants ‘rapists’ with ‘lots of problems.’ His hate-fueled words and divisive policy proposals won’t make America great — they are the opposite of what makes America great.
