Washington, DC – Correct The Record released the following statement in response to news that Trey Gowdy, Republican chairman of the Select Committee on Benghazi, referenced the tragedy in Benghazi at a political event.
Despite Gowdy’s claim in 2014 that he abstained from speaking at political events about the tragedy that resulted in the deaths of four Americans, Gowdy spoke in Tennessee last weekend about his investigation into the Benghazi tragedy at an event raising funds for the National Federation of Pachyderm Clubs, which refers to itself “an official Allied organization of the RNC.”
“Trey Gowdy’s mention at a political event of the Benghazi tragedy, while disturbing, is unsurprising,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “Though Gowdy claims to want to conduct an unbiased investigation and said he hadn’t sought a penny ‘on the backs of four murdered Americans,’ his actions speak louder than words. Trey Gowdy has politicized his investigation to benefit Republicans, proving that his Benghazi investigation is a political hit job against Hillary Clinton – nothing more, nothing less.”
This isn’t the first time Gowdy’s investigation into Benghazi has been used for fundraising purposes. Last year, the Stop Hillary PAC requested political donations with advertisements using Trey Gowdy’s name, image, and position as Chairman of the Benghazi Select Committee.
Millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on multiple reviews and investigations looking into the tragedy in Benghazi, and nothing incriminating has been found. Ten congressional committees have participated in the investigations into the Benghazi tragedy, which have included more than 50 senior level staff briefings, over twenty hearings, five independent/bipartisan reports, dozens of interviews, and the disclosure of at least 40,000 pages of documents.
