Washington, DC – Correct The Record released the following statement on the GOP’s continued politicization of the Benghazi tragedy.
“Tomorrow’s hearing is further proof that House Republicans have abandoned any pretense that the Select Committee on Benghazi has anything to do any more with embassy security or what happened one fateful night nearly three years ago ,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “Instead, the ‘Select Committee on Benghazi’ has become a political sideshow and is now little more than the House GOP’s ‘Select Committee to Destroy Hillary Clinton.’
“After ten congressional committees have participated in the investigations into the Benghazi tragedy and millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent, nothing has been found to support the Republicans’ baseless allegations about what happened the night the tragedy occurred. Time and time again, their questions have been asked and answered.
“Now, thwarted in their attempt to gain political traction on the actual facts, Republicans are trolling for anything they can use to harm Hillary Clinton no matter how off topic or outlandish. In this case, they have subpoenaed a cooperative witness for show – a witness who has not one thing to do with what happened in Benghazi or the government’s reaction to it – because hurting Hillary Clinton’s political prospects is now the all consuming passion of House Republicans (not getting to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi – as if that was ever the real purpose of this committee to begin with). This is no longer about Benghazi, it is about Hillary Clinton plain and simple.
“That the GOP led House Select Committee on Benghazi is a farce and a joke is not exactly news. However, the GOP’s continued politicization of the deaths of four Americans is disgraceful and should be the object of widespread scorn.”
