Christie Tries to Defend the Indefensible – His Record

At tonight’s debate Chris Christie tried to defend his economic record as governor of New Jersey.

CHRISTIE: “New Jersey had its best year of job growth in the last 15 years, under five different governors, this year in New Jersey. New Jersey has cut spending over $2.3 billion and we have 10,000 fewer employees than we had when I walked in the door.”

But we all know the truth. Under Christie’s leadership, New Jersey’s credit rating was downgraded nine times – more than any other New Jersey governor.

Under Chris Christie, New Jersey’s credit rating was downgraded 9 times through April 2015, more than any other New Jersey governor. “New Jersey’s credit rating has been downgraded again, this time by Moody’s Investors Service. Each of Wall Street’s three major rating agencies have now lowered their assessment of New Jersey’s fiscal health three times since Gov. Chris Christie took office, more than any other New Jersey governor. The downgrades don’t have an immediate impact on state finances but can mean it will cost more for the state to borrow money by selling bonds.” [Asbury Park Press, 4/17/15]
