Donald Trump has hit a shocking new low.
This morning, Trump criticized Ghazala Khan for not speaking during her husband Khizr’s emotional and patriotic tribute to their fallen son Army Captain Humayun Khan during the Democratic National Convention. “She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say,” Trump told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos.
It was an extraordinarily bigoted — and widely condemned — attack on a family that has made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Trump even dared to justify his comments by insisting that, like the Khans, “I’ve made a lot of sacrifices.” Conservative commentators have called the remarks “inhuman,” “disgusting and pathetic” and “dog manure.” This afternoon, a new hashtag #TrumpSacrifices, mocking Trump’s perverse comments, began trending on Twitter. The question now for every major Republican — starting with his running mate and father of a Marine, Mike Pence — is whether they will stand by this inhuman attack on the Khan family, or once and for all break with Trump.
