Washington, D.C.—Correct The Record today released five new videos hitting five Republican Senate candidates for defending—and enabling—Donald Trump and his unhinged, authoritarian and bigoted presidential campaign. The videos are part of an effort by Correct The Record to hold Republican senatorial candidates accountable for supporting Trump’s misogyny, xenophobia and deeply paranoid mendacity. The videos feature footage of U.S. Senators Richard Burr (R-NC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and U.S. Representative Todd Young (R-IN) defending—and even praising—Trump.
“Defending Donald Trump should be disqualifying. These Republican Senate candidates have betrayed the American people by aiding and abetting Donald Trump’s disturbing and disgusting presidential campaign,” said Brad Woodhouse, President of Correct The Record. “These five candidates have been Trump’s stooges for months—and we’re not going to let them get away with it. Correct The Record will expose these candidates as Trumpkins directly responsible for The Donald’s disgraceful political rhetoric and toxic policy positions.”
For months, these Republican elected officials have ignored their constituents and cravenly lined up behind Trump’s presidential bid. In the process, they have helped support—and legitimize—Trump’s deeply offensive attacks on women, individuals with disabilities, communities of color and our democracy itself. Just a few weeks ago, Sen. Ayotte said Trump “absolutely” was a role model for children and Sen. Rubio has proudly said “we have to make sure that Donald wins this election.” Sen. Toomey stood with Trump even after he mocked a reporter with disabilities, attacked immigrants and demonized Muslim Americans. Sen. Burr has gone even further saying Trump has “done a tremendous job.” And Indiana Senate candidate Todd Young continues to defend Trump even after the Republican nominee viciously attacked federal judge—and fellow Hoosier—Gonzalo Curiel for his Mexican heritage.
